Yeovil boxer is West champion

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 14:00

YEOVIL amateur boxer Jon Vance has been crowned Western Counties light-welterweight champion.

He won the final – at Torquay, Devon – on points.

Vance, a former Yeovil Town youth footballer, came back from a shaky start against Andy Campbell of Plymouth to outpoint the Devon boxer.

His victory was unanimous, one judge stating that Vance won the contest 21-10.

Vance will now take on a boxer from London in Bristol on 30 November in the next round of the National Novice Championships.

Vance has only recently returned to the ring after taking a break of almost two years.

The Yeovil Amateur Boxing Club member built up a strong fan base before temporarily hanging up his gloves.

Yeovil veteran welterweight Justin Hicks stopped Bournemouth’s Ali Mahoon in the third round at Sturminster Newton.

Hicks dominated from the first bell, sending his opponent to the canvas on three occasions.

Yeovil schoolboy Dean Dodge lost on points to Chris Addaway of Plymouth.

Latest figures show six people a week are stabbed to death on the streets of Britain. From next week courts will be able to sentence knife offenders to "community payback" work including picking up litter and cleaning up graffiti while wearing high-visibility jackets. Will this be enough to stem the rise in knife crime?
