'Confidence high' for table-top tussle

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 14:00

YEOVIL Town Ladies’ Football Club captain Sarah Lawler has insisted confidence is high among the squad as they prepare for a table-topping clash at Queens Park Rangers Ladies on Sunday.

The Glovers enter the South West Combination Women’s League game on the back of an 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

Yeovil currently lie in second place in the league, a point behind Rangers.

Despite their heavy loss in the cup, Lawler said the trip is motivation itself for Yeovil to bounce back to winning ways.

A 2-1 defeat on home turf to QPR in October will also figure highly on the players’ mind.

“Even though we came away from the Plymouth game very disappointed after being knocked out we have not let it affect our confidence,” she said.

“We will want to get into their face and take the game to them.

“When we played them at home they beat us but it was not a good reflection on how we played on the day.”

With Yeovil flying high, Lawler praised the efforts of manager Steve Phelps and his assistant and professional footballer Nathan Jones.

She said: “Steve knows us inside out and it is beneficial to have Nathan Jones coming in to make sure our attitude is correct and that we get the best we can out of ourselves.”

Lawler is one of five Yeovil Town Ladies to be involved in Somerset’s South West Counties Under-18 Women’s Championship match with Hampshire on 7 December.

Lawler will coach the side, while Georgia Coles, Jemma Tewksbury, Amy Wilde and Annusia Rourke will be in the running for a starting place.

“It is really positive that we have got some talented girls coming through,” said Lawler.

“A lot of the talented players we have coming through at Yeovil have played at centre-of-excellence level in Dorset or Somerset.”

The game against Hampshire will take place at Taunton Town’s Wordsworth Drive (7.30pm).

Meanwhile, Yeovil Town Ladies Reserves twice came from behind to beat Ilminster Town Ladies in Somerset County Women’s League Division One on Sunday.

With 20 minutes left  the Glovers were trailing 4-2 but fought back to win 7-4 and remain in top spot.

Tewksbury grabbed three for Yeovil, Claire Dawe scored twice and Charlie Lewis and Naiomi Lander completed the scoring.

Former Glover Alice Charlton (2) and Lesley Spearing scored for Ilminster.

Latest figures show six people a week are stabbed to death on the streets of Britain. From next week courts will be able to sentence knife offenders to "community payback" work including picking up litter and cleaning up graffiti while wearing high-visibility jackets. Will this be enough to stem the rise in knife crime?
